1. San Juan National Historic Site 

Step back in time at the San Juan National Historic Site, the only official national park on the island. But this isn’t your typical park—it’s a treasure trove of history. Stroll along the Paseo del Morro trail, a 9-kilometer path flanked by the Atlantic Ocean. Whether you’re bird-watching, jogging, or soaking in the sea breeze, this trail is a local favorite. 

Be sure to visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a 16th-century Spanish fort with dungeons, barracks, and ramparts. For an extra treat, head here after sunset. The lack of city lights makes it an incredible stargazing spot—don’t forget your telescope! 

2. Aguirre Forest Reserve 

If wildlife spotting is your thing, the Aguirre Forest Reserve on Puerto Rico’s south coast is a must-visit: picture salt ponds, mangroves, and lagoons teeming with birds like Mangrove Rails and Yellow-Crowned Night Herons. 

What’s more, you can explore the boardwalk at the heart of the forest, which weaves through mangrove marshes. Planning a picnic? Bring your basket and enjoy a peaceful meal at one of the pavilions. Keep an eye on the lagoons—you might even spot a playful manatee. And remember, bug spray is your best friend here! 

3. El Yunque Rainforest 

For an unforgettable tropical adventure, head to El Yunque Rainforest, the only rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Hike to the summit starting at Mina Falls for misty mountain views, or take a refreshing swim in the natural pools along La Coca Trail. Need an adrenaline rush? Rope-swing your way into a lagoon on the El Angelito trail—it’s super fun.
